DESIGN CONCEPT - THE AFRICAN FRACTAL

Ora Studio in collaboration with Elena De Santis presents a design for a cultural centre in Senegal, Africa.

Our idea comes from fractal patterns, geometries existing in human body, nature and in the whole fabric of the universe. Fractals also constitute the layout of many indigenous African villages organized according to geometric patterns, sometimes arranged in spirals. The design of African settlements follows specific patterns coming from the nature and has a spiritual meaning, representing the Divine. Fractals are not only applied to religion but also to textiles, art crafts, hairstyles and African polyrhythmic music.

The proposal will promote the local identity through its Exhibition area, handicraft stalls under the bamboo canopy and classrooms for Education with skills based alternative learning. People will use the external space to cultivate their own products, they will learn to recycle waste and manufacture. The internal space is flexible and suitable for performances including dances and religious ceremonies. Therefore the spirit of our project, taking inspiration from the fractal, wants to create an intimate relationship with the environment, African constructive culture and local heritage.
